Podio’s new pricing policy may change the way we build CRM’s and I think that’s a good thing.

With automation usage now becoming something developers need to consider carefully, there’s a bigger lesson for anyone building a Podio system:

Not everything needs to be an automation.

In the past, when automation usage wasn’t a major constraint, it was easy to keep adding workflows:

→ An automation to update a field

→ Another to trigger a status change

→ Another to copy information

→ Another to perform a calculation

→ And another automation to trigger the next one.

Over time, a CRM can become unnecessarily complicated and put an avoidable load on the system.

Sometimes, the better solution is simply a calculation field.

Sometimes a Podio feature can do the job without an automation.

Sometimes the best automation is the one you don’t create.

For CRM creators and developers, this means we need to be much more intentional about how we design systems.

The goal shouldn’t be:

“How many things can we automate?”

It should be:

“What is the simplest, cleanest way to achieve the desired result?”

A well-designed CRM isn’t one with the most automations.

It’s one where every automation has a purpose.

And I think this shift will ultimately lead to cleaner, faster and more sustainable Podio systems.
